Food for the Children
We aim to provide children with wholesome, organic or bio-dynamic food at our kindergarten.
Around 10.00am, we have morning tea. At approximately 11.30am we come together again for a shared lunch and the kindergarten day concludes with an afternoon snack at 2.15pm before the children leave at 2.30pm.
The sharing of food is an important part of our day, and children are invited to help in the preparation and serving of our meals. Before we eat, we sing the following verse to give thanks:
Whakapaingia enei kai
We welcome parents and caregivers to join us for lunch. Just let our kitchen helper know in the morning so that we can prepare a plate for you. It really is a special part of our day.
You'll find notes from a Parent Evening sharing about our philosophy around food and mealtimes at kindergarten here.
The following is the current menu at the kindergarten and the children soon refer to each day fondly as “it’s bread roll and hummus day” or “it’s pasta day” and so on.
Monday - Sunshine rice with salad
Tuesday – Lentil, pea, barley & vegetable soup
Wednesday – Bread rolls, hummus and salad
Thursday – Pasta with tomato sauce and salad. The pasta we use is wholewheat organic.
Friday – Pizza and Salad
Excepting Wednesday’s where fresh baked bread rolls are served as a part of the lunchtime meal, each morning, bread rolls are served with seasonal fruit and afternoon teas are either edamame beans, crackers or popcorn along with fruit and on Monday’s and Thursday’s fruit or carob smoothies are served.
Please discuss any special dietary needs that your child may have.
To encourage children to develop a sense of responsibility and servitude, once a child is 4 years of age, they are given the task to help hand out the bowls and plates of food at lunchtime. This task is held with great reverence by the children.
There is real purpose behind having the same meal on each day of the week. You'll read about our philosphy on this here.
We have had lots of requests for our recipes so that families can share in our lovely menu at home. Below you'll find some of our recipes. Do email Traceylee if you'd like us to add any of our other recipes.
